Our Certification Programs

Becoming a PINC & STEEL Certified Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist offers you the opportunity to make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by cancer

Cancer Rehabilitation provides so many benefits to people affected by cancer.

It reduces unnecessary disability, loss of function, and helps people return to work and productive lives. However, the frailty of patients, co-morbid conditions, multiple medications, side effects of cancer treatments, and a host of other factors contribute to making this one of the most medically complex populations that physiotherapists treat.

PINC & STEEL International provides a comprehensive post-graduate cancer rehabilitation education and mentorship program. Our PINC & STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation certification courses provide a comprehensive foundation of knowledge of the entire cancer process and best practice in cancer rehabilitation for all types of cancer.

Since 2008, PINC & STEEL International has trained hundreds of physiotherapists to help people thrive after a cancer diagnosis, reducing the burden cancer has on the lives of so many.

  • Module One - Understanding pain related to cancer treatment = Presented by Physiotherapist, Paul Lagerman
    • This module consists of 2 presentations and a practical interactive webinar run by Paul Lagerman
      • Presentation 1 = Neurobiology of pain - Understanding pain related to cancer treatment

Pain is a an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. We now know that pain is 100% of the time produced by the brain. We also know there are no pain receptors, pain fibres, pain nerves, or pain messages that come from the body. Cancer pain differs somewhat from non-malignant musculoskeletal pain as a number of the treatments are highly invasive yet necessary to tackle cancer. This presentation discusses the causes of pain as a result of the various treatments that patients undergo as part of their cancer treatment.

      • Presentation 2 = Pain and the affective mind - the perceptual and emotional reaction to pain

Pain is more than just the cathartic expression "ouch". There lies an inner experience that is enveloped in feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, uncertainty, fear, isolation and, chaos. This inner experience is distress. This presentation discusses the perceptual - emotional reactions that we have with pain.

  • Module 2 - Counselling micro skills for effective discussions- improving understanding of patient status and concerns = Presented by Dr Judith Ansell is a NZ registered psychologist with a PhD in Biomedical Science from Liggins Institute, University of Auckland
    • This module consists of 3 presentations and a practical interactive webinar run by Dr Judith Ansell
      • Presentation 1 = Counselling micro-skills for effective discussion and to enhance understanding of patient status and concerns.
      • Presentation 2 = Micro-skills in practice: incorporating extended skills and developing your own professional style.
      • Presentation 3 = Self-care: Compassion and self-compassion to maintain a healthy and positive focus.  Dealing with grief and loss.

PINC & STEEL International have two types of Scholarships on offer to experienced Physiotherapists from any country each year.

Rural Scholarships plus
  • The PINC & STEEL Rural Scholarships are to help selected physiotherapists in smaller centres participate in our post-graduate certification in cancer rehabilitation.   Most cancer patients that live outside the main centres have to travel great distances to receive their cancer treatment.  They often miss out on adequate after-care and recovery programs.  We don't think this is fair and  PINC & STEEL are dedicated to helping more cancer survivors thrive in all regions.   The Rural Scholarship will contribute to the costs of the certification training for selected physiotherapists.

  • To Apply for a Rural Scholarship for our PINC or STEEL certification:  Please indicate on the application form that you would like to be considered for a scholarship, add a few sentences about your region and why you would like the scholarship.

Start Up Scholarships plus
  • The PINC & STEEL Start Up Scholarships are to help selected physiotherapists that have clinical pilates experience, to start in the field of oncology.  Many cancer patients and survivors are missing out on cancer recovery programs because there are not enough trained physiotherapists to support them.  At PINC & STEEL we believe EVERY cancer patient should have the opportunity to heal as well as possible and function at an optimal level whether their cancer is cured, in remission or they live with cancer as a chronic disease.   The Start Up Scholarship will contribute to the costs of the certification training for selected physiotherapists.

  • To Apply for a Start Up Scholarship for either our PINC or STEEL certification course: Please indicate on the online application form that you would like to be considered for a scholarship and add detail about why you would like to start working with this patient group.
